Charlie Mackesy describes himself as a, ‘grubby’ artist and self deprecatingly dismisses his drawings as scribbles. Next week, he has an exhibition in London of ‘scribbles’ responsible for enriching the lives of over sixty eight thousand Instagram followers and many more who have felt his drawings speak to them and help. In Charlie fashion it is his followers who have persuaded him to put on a show and so I entreat you to get down to St James’s and take time out to breathe in a little calm and a little kindness. The prints are also the most ideal presents for Christmas…!
Unlike his previous work of sculpture, charcoal portraits, oils and grand bronzes, of which you can see an example outside Holy Trinity Brompton in Knightsbridge this is something very different and grew organically from little ink drawings and innocent words that resonate, into a movement.
With tear inducing simplicity and thoughtful kindness…it seems these drawings have given a lot of people a lot of hope and comfort. Just what this chaotic modern world needs. Back to basics and a bedtime story told in drawings. Kindness in brush strokes and love in ink.
I present, ‘The boy, The Horse, The mole and The Fox’!
These are really divine and the perfect little present to send someone who is feeling the weight of life, is a little blue or just needs to be told they are being thought of…
Prints will be available to buy at the show and this is what I will be giving all my family and friends for Christmas – a dose of Charlie and his magical sketches.
P.S. Not at the show but equally wonderful are his cartoons… eccentric wordplay and superbly captured characters…!
