The Maldives Now

By March 1, 2019 Diary

The Maldives has become synonymous with honeymoons, romance and destination weddings. Sandbanks disappearing into aquamarine seas and wonderful stilted beach villas, the perfect escape from reality.

Here we look two fabulous islands, both of which stock Juliet Dunn so clearly have great taste and both that have a different spin on luxury, décor and what the Maldives means,

This island is rather special – channelling a Hawaii festival vibe that rivals Coachella and increasingly brings in groups of friends to relax and party on their own deserted island we love the move towards a fancy dress party vibe!

The designers had fun when creating Finolhu. A mix of retro-chic design and futuristic touches, like the funnel-shaped bar terrace, it would defy its deserted island location if it weren’t for rustic Maldivian throwbacks like thatched roofs.

Its entertainment’s anything but ‘typical’ too, especially Baa Baa Beach Club restaurant’s retro pool parties, DJ sessions and cinema screenings.

Its not all party party, there are the usual water activities (think totally unusual with the most fabulous arrayy of marine life) and a plethora of on trend wellness classes  such as yoga, breathwork. HIIT sessions etc.

Food options are equally exciting, from the Milk Bar ‘old school tuck shop’ to the rustic yet refined Fish & Crab Shack, set on the sandbar and reached by foot, swimming, or dhoni boat. Crab Claw and Slaw…. Yum!

The rooms are all fitted with 50s style Marshall radios continuing the theme and we particularly fell for the silver stream serving welcome drinks on arrival.

Buzzy and hip your outfits must match so go straight to our tribal section and think too much is never enough! I think this rather retro tribal jumpsuit in white jade and pink is the perfect number for a pool side dance and shake!

If all this wasn’t enough there is one more treat in store on this island – forget Glastonbury and muddy filled yurts, try glamping Finolhu-style — spend a night in the unique Beach Bubble Tent on a secluded stretch of sand. Chill out, watch the sun set and enjoy a private beach barbecue before spending a night under the stars and watching the sun rise next morning.

Whitewashed villas sit over turquoise waters at this Baa Atoll Maldives resort. The minimalist lines of sun-kissed beach houses contrast against the curves of swaying palms.
