How It's Dunn

India

Juliet Dunn’s love affair with India started many, many years ago.
An endless source of inspiration, there is nowhere on earth that could come close to producing the vibrant colours our brand is known for. During our countless trips we are continuously hunting for embroidery, print and embroidery ideas to develop our new collections. We are proud to work with artisans across India, travelling across the country to explore the specialist regional techniques and helping to keep some of these ancient traditions alive. Every Juliet Dunn piece is made by hand with love and care in India by talented printers, embroiderers and tailors.

Block Printing

Our block prints are made using hand carved wooden blocks which are created in Jaipur. They are carefully and precisely carved by hand and have to line up exactly to create the perfect print.
Each print has an individual block for each different colour, and the printers use only their experience and eyes to line up the design. All of our prints are blocked by hand. Artisans walk up and down the lengths of the table layering up the design with each block and colour.
Once complete the fabric is hung up on frame in the sun to dry the dye and allow the colours to come alive

Embroidery

Our hand embroidered pieces are created in Lucknow and Dehli.
Lucknow specialises in Chikan work which is a traditional embroidery style created entirely by hand. Some of the embroidery designs can take weeks to complete. In Dehli, a template of the pattern is made called a khaka which is then traced onto the fabric so that the embroiderers can see where to work.
All of our pieces are finished by hand and created by these talented humans.

Hand Dying Techniques

Our vibrant colours are all mixed by hand, mainly in Delhli, to ensure the perfect tone. Factors such as the weather and sun-strength means none of these dye mixes are ever identical, so matching them is a true skill.
Our ombre garments are all dyed individually by hand. First the base colour is dyed, then each piece is dipped in a contrast dye to create the ombre effect in exactly the right place on the garment. The finishing touches are then added to complete the item.
